This Is Antwerp puts young creatives in the spotlight through this animated GIF series

It is no secret that Antwerp is bustling with creativity! There are 18,000 registered professionals working in 8,000 creative companies in the city, or a staggering one in six organisations in the city.

This Is Antwerp keeps tabs on what young and upcoming creative minds are up to in the city, providing updates for interested visitors through A site to check out before visiting the port city, because you can find all kinds of new party concepts, concerts, coffee bars, restaurants, shops and more on it.

This Is Antwerp thought it was about time to put all these creative minds in the spotlight, with a series of animated GIFs. For this series, This Is Antwerp worked with Studio Make Stuff, a small plug & play Antwerp based agency that comes up with creative concepts. In the past they already developed creative videos for the city of Antwerp as well as a graphic design for a bridge and graphic installations

Check out these interesting young creatives below, who contribute to shaping the city along with thousands of others.

Jitsk Heyninck, a 24-year-old chocolate maker, has toured the world with his chocolate creations, but decided to settle in Antwerp where he opened a chocolate workshop and shop next to the De Koninck brewery. Jitsk is young but incredibly passionate about what he does.

De Koninck is the city’s brewery and has been brewing beer here since 1833. They offer a brilliant beer pairing experience, combining their beers with the delicious Jitsk chocolates and Van Tricht cheese. Definitely worth trying on your next trip to Antwerp!

Klein Agency is an architecture and furniture design studio founded by Jon and Masa Kleinhample (an Angeleno-Slovenian couple) in the heart of the upcoming Eilandje neighbourhood.
They have a signature style, using locally sourced leather and oak combined with black steel frames, and industrial tooling. Their collection of home furniture can be purchased online  or you can make an appointment to visit their showroom at Braziliestraat 23, Antwerp.

Devon Halfnight Leflufy is a Canadian born, but Antwerp-based fast rising fashion designer. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. For his Fall/Winter 2016 collection, the designer reflected on Jacques Derrida’s prophetic 1994 assertion that “justice is deconstruction’ and what this could mean for a modern wardrobe. “Justice is deconstruction’, can be reinterpreted as finding calm within chaos, which Halfnight LeFlufy finds as an apt analogy for contemporary culture today and furthermore, the disappearance of sub-cultures. The collection bears an elevated take on wardrobe essentials, such as the double breasted coat, the T-shirt and the suit. Shop his collection in Antwerp at Louis, Lombardenstraat 2, 2000 Antwerp.

Amélie Lens. If you are looking for an all-round Belgian creative, Amélie Lens is your girl. This Antwerp-based top model has been traveling around the world since the age of 16. In addition to her modelling work she is also the co-founder of Baerbar, a healthy, on-the-go breakfast concept. But most of all, Amélie wants to focus on her career as a techno DJ/producer. Check to know whether she is throwing a party when you are in town!

Faisal is a 22-year-old popular DJ and radio host, who brings his straight edge and funky hip-hop beats to parties all over Belgium. All night long and every weekend in different cities! Want to see what this DJ is all about? Then check to see if he’s behind the decks when you are in town!

DTM FUNK aka David Tricot Mizero is the co-founder of the Antwerp-based monthly party concept and record label called Foot Juice Art. This wild urban party concept has up tempo funky, juke, ghetto booty and boogie beats in store for you. The name Foot Juice Art is derived from the “Footwork” dance technique, an unknown urban scene here in Belgium but which David and his crew have introduced us to. Foot Juice Art is not the only concept that David is working on. He also is part of three other Antwerp-based party concepts called Campion sound, Shuttles and park. Shuttles is a place where creative and original DJs, producers and MCs get together and show off their skills during superb parties. Park is an urban music festival with live acts and DJs, a place for Belgian youngsters to get together, network and enjoy music and champion sound. A Belgium based concept that serves as a platform for promoting talented beatmakers and producers from Belgium. Keep an eye on for upcoming dates!

Stephanie Specht graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp as a graphic designer. From Brussels to Cape Town to Princeton and New York, Stephanie has been freelancing her way all over the world. Now this talented lady is bringing her best practices and experiences back to Antwerp. Stephanie designs magazines, books, identities, posters, illustrations and many more. Besides working on the design of famous books such as Ugly Belgian Houses, We Can’t Do This Alone: Jefferson Hack the System or the Dutch cover version of the novelist Catherine Lacey’s ‘Nobody is ever missing’ and redesigning the latest S Magazine, she is also the author of her very own book called ‘These Five Years’, a 5-year diary. This first edition was published by McNally Jackson (New York, USA). The second edition was published in 2012 by BAi and is available from bookshops all over Belgium. Shop for her work here
Definitely visit BLT when you are in town, a great coffee bar for which Stephanie created the identity: Lange Lozanastraat 292, 2000 Antwerp.

Brabo’s Hand Tattooshop Antwerpen is a popular tattoo shop in Antwerp. This shop is part of the city’s young and urban scene and specialises in American Old Skool tattoos. Sailor-style! Behind the tattoo shop you will find a retro barbershop for men that takes you right back to the fifties. Expect clean cuts and waxy hairdos!

Kastaar studio is a bold graphic design studio and analogue print factory. An and Stoffel love strong typographic illustrations and graphics and started collecting old iron letterpress machines. As you may have surmised, their main expertise is slow printing using these old skool letterpresses. Kastaar combines contemporary technology with more artisanal techniques to preserve the traditional and artisan ways of graphic design. They wanted to highlight the contrast between slow printing and the speed of today’s social media. When visiting Antwerp, chances are someone will give you a business card or you’ll see a poster in the city that was designed and printed by Kastaar!
